InkSpire stores all data locally inside its installation directory. Users do not choose a save location, and InkSpire does not provide an automatic restore function.
This article explains where InkSpire stores its data and how to back it up manually.
Where InkSpire Stores Your Data
InkSpire saves all project and preference data directly inside its install directory.
The following files are used:
inkspire.db
Stores all projects, chapters, scenes, and written contentpreferences.json
Stores appearance and startup preferencesmanifest.txt
Stores application and project metadata
These files are created and managed automatically by InkSpire.
Backup Your Data (Manual)
InkSpire includes a Backup option under the File menu that allows you to export a backup archive.
When you create a backup:
- InkSpire packages the following files into a ZIP:
inkspire.dbpreferences.jsonmanifest.txt
- You choose where to save the ZIP file
- The backup is read-only and does not affect your current data
This ZIP file is your complete InkSpire backup.
What the Backup Includes
The backup contains:
- All projects
- All chapters and scenes
- All written content
- Preferences and settings
The backup does not include:
- Temporary files
- Application binaries
Restoring from a Backup
InkSpire does not include an automatic restore feature.
To restore from a backup:
- Close InkSpire completely
- Navigate to the InkSpire install directory
- Extract the contents of the backup ZIP
- Replace the existing files:
inkspire.dbpreferences.jsonmanifest.txt
- Launch InkSpire again
InkSpire will load the restored data on startup.
Important Notes
- Restoring a backup overwrites existing data
- Always keep a copy of your current files before restoring
- Only restore backups created by the same or compatible InkSpire versions
Recommended Backup Practices
- Create backups regularly, especially before major changes
- Store backups outside the InkSpire install directory
- Keep multiple backups if working on long projects
