This guide walks you through creating and writing your first scene in InkSpire.
Scenes are the primary writing unit in InkSpire. You will spend most of your time writing and editing individual scenes.
Before You Begin
To write a scene, you must have:
- At least one project
- At least one chapter within that project
If you have not created a project yet, see Creating Your First Project.
Creating a New Scene
- Select an existing project
- Select a chapter within that project
- Choose New Scene from the toolbar or menu
- Enter a scene title when prompted
- Click OK to create the scene
The new scene will appear in the scene selector and open automatically in the editor.
Writing in the Editor
Once a scene is open, you can begin typing immediately.
- Click inside the editor and start writing
- Your text is saved automatically as you work
- You can switch between scenes without losing content
InkSpire is designed to minimize interruptions while you write.
Formatting Text
InkSpire supports basic formatting options:
- Bold
- Italic
- Underline
- H1 (heading for scene name)
Formatting can be applied using toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts.
Formatting applies only to the selected text.
Spell Checking
InkSpire checks spelling as you write.
- Misspelled words are highlighted
- Corrections can be made directly in the editor
Spell checking helps catch simple errors without interrupting your workflow. This can be turned off in the menu.
Word and Character Counts
InkSpire tracks progress automatically.
You can view:
- Word count for the current scene
- Word count for the chapter
- Word count for the entire project
Character counts are also available at each level.
These counts update as you write.
Switching Between Scenes
To move between scenes:
- Select a different scene from the scene list
- The editor updates to show the selected scene
InkSpire auto-saves on a schedule, but if you switch scenes before it has saved it will prompt you to save.
Viewing Your Work
InkSpire offers different ways to view what you’ve written:
- Scene View – focus on one scene at a time
- View All Scenes – review all scenes in a chapter without editing
- View Entire Book – read your full manuscript without editing

If Something Looks Wrong
If you do not see text appear immediately or are prompted to save unexpectedly:
- Make sure the correct scene is selected
- Try switching to another scene and back
