Writing & Editing

InkSpire supports basic text formatting to help you emphasize and organize your writing without distracting from the writing process.

This article explains the formatting options available and how to use them.

Supported Formatting

InkSpire currently supports the following text styles:

  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • H1 (scene titles)

These styles can be applied to selected text within a scene.

Applying Formatting

To format text:

  1. Select the text you want to format
  2. Use the formatting buttons in the toolbar

Formatting is applied only to the selected text.

Removing Formatting

To remove formatting:

  1. Select the formatted text
  2. Click the same formatting button again or use the same keyboard shortcut

This toggles the formatting off.

Combining Formatting

Formatting styles cannot be combined in the current version 1.0

For example:

  • If you select Bold the selected text turns Bold
  • If you then choose Underline it will change that same text to Underline
  • Only one format at a time can be selected

All formatting options apply only to the selected text.

Formatting and Scene Titles

Scene titles are separate from the text inside the editor.

  • Formatting applied in the editor does not affect scene titles
  • Scene titles are used for navigation and organization
  • The H1 is likely used as the scene title but can be different

Use formatting within the editor to emphasize words or phrases, not to label scenes.

Formatting in Different Views

Formatting is preserved across all views:

  • Scene View
  • View All Scenes
  • View Entire Book

The appearance may differ slightly depending on the view, but formatting remains intact.

Formatting in Exports

Formatting is preserved when exporting your work.

  • Supported formatting carries over to DOCX, PDF, HTML, and TXT where applicable
  • Plain text exports may simplify formatting

See Exporting & Printing for format-specific details.

If Formatting Does Not Appear

If formatting does not appear as expected:

  • Confirm text is selected before applying formatting
  • Try switching scenes and returning
  • Check the active view mode

If issues persist, see Troubleshooting.
