Working with Scene Titles and Headings

InkSpire uses scene titles and in-editor headings for different purposes. Understanding the distinction helps you organize your work without unexpected results when viewing or exporting.

Scene Titles

A scene title is the name you give a scene when it is created.

  • Scene titles are used for navigation and organization
  • They appear in the scene selector
  • They help you identify scenes quickly

Scene titles are not part of the written content of the scene.

Editing Scene Titles

Scene titles are set when a scene is created.

  • Scene titles identify the scene in lists and menus
  • Changing the text inside the editor does not change the scene title

Scene titles are separate from anything you type in the editor.

Headings Inside the Editor

Headings created inside the editor are for on-screen writing and review.

  • Headings are visible while editing a scene
  • Headings are visible in View All Scenes
  • Headings are not displayed in View Entire Book
  • Headings are removed when exporting your work

Use headings as a writing aid inside InkSpire—not as manuscript structure for exports.

How Titles Appear in Different Views

  • Scene View
  • Scene titles identify the scene. Headings inside the editor are visible while you write.
  • View All Scenes
  • Scene titles may appear to separate scenes. Headings inside each scene are also visible in this view.
  • View Entire Book
  • This view is meant for a clean read-through. Headings and scene title lines are not shown as part of the manuscript text.

Best Practices

  • Use scene titles for navigation and organization
  • Use headings inside the editor if you want visible section breaks
  • Do not rely on scene titles as chapter or section headers in exported text

This keeps your manuscript clean and predictable across views and exports.

Common Questions

Why doesn’t my scene title appear in the exported document?
Scene titles are organizational labels and are not part of the written content.

Why do I see scene titles in some views but not others?
Some views display scene titles to help with review and navigation. This does not change the underlying content.
