After installing HomeBank via Flatpak on Bazzite Linux, I noticed that the auto-complete feature for Payee and Category fields had stopped working. The data was still there—I could see all of my existing payees and categories—but typing into those fields no longer suggested previous entries.
Everything else in HomeBank appeared to work normally, making this a frustrating issue to troubleshoot.
Fortunately, the fix turned out to be fairly simple.
Symptoms
You may be experiencing this problem if:
- HomeBank is installed via Flatpak.
- Existing payees and categories are still present.
- Typing into the Payee or Category fields produces no auto-complete suggestions.
- The problem began after installing HomeBank on Bazzite or another Wayland-based Linux distribution.
Verify the Fix
First, launch HomeBank from a terminal using X11.
Open Konsole and run:
flatpak run --socket=x11 --env=GDK_BACKEND=x11 fr.free.Homebank
If HomeBank launches and the Payee and Category auto-complete begins working again, you’ve confirmed the issue is related to the display backend.
Make the Fix Permanent
Rather than launching HomeBank from the terminal every time, you can configure the Flatpak using Flatseal.
1. Open Flatseal
Launch Flatseal from your application menu.
2. Select HomeBank
Choose HomeBank from the list of installed Flatpak applications.
3. Verify X11 Support
Under the Sockets section, make sure:
- X11 Windowing System is enabled.
On my installation this was already checked.
4. Add an Environment Variable
Scroll down to Environment.
Add the following variable:
Name and value
GDK_BACKEND=x11
5. Test HomeBank
Launch HomeBank normally.
In my case, the application briefly flashed and immediately closed instead of opening.
If HomeBank Won’t Launch
If HomeBank flashes and closes after adding the environment variable, return to Flatseal.
Under Sockets:
- Disable Wayland Windowing System.
- Disable Fallback to X11 Windowing System.
Leave X11 Windowing System enabled.
After making these changes, HomeBank launched normally and the Payee and Category auto-complete functionality was restored.
Final Result
Once HomeBank was forced to use X11, the missing auto-complete functionality immediately returned. Existing payees and categories were once again suggested while typing, just as expected.
If you’re running HomeBank as a Flatpak on Bazzite and your auto-complete suddenly stops working, this workaround may save you a lot of time.
